WHAT IS SLIPPED DISC? OVERVIEW

A slipped disc, also known as a herniated disc, occurs when the soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine pushes out. This condition can lead to pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg, depending on the location of the disc.
At LiveWell Hospital, we specialize in providing comprehensive slipped disc treatment in Ahmedabad, offering both non-invasive and surgical options tailored to each patient’s needs.
CAUSES & SYMPTOMS OF SLIPPED DISC

  • Age-related wear and tear (degeneration)
  • Injury or trauma to the spine
  • Improper lifting techniques
  • Repetitive strenuous activities
  • Obesity, which adds stress to the lower back
  • Sedentary lifestyle or prolonged sitting
  • Genetic predisposition to spine disorders
SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
  • Pain radiating from the lower back down the legs (sciatica)
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected area
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain that worsens with movement or prolonged sitting

SLIPPED DISC/HERNIATED DISC TREATMENT

1

Conservative Treatments
For acute and less severe cases, rest, medication, and physical therapy can provide relief. Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting, forward bending, and sitting on the floor. If symptoms improve, conservative treatments are continued for several weeks.
2

Interventional Procedures
If exercise and medicine are not working than your doctor might suggest you some interventions. Pain Management treats such diseases with techniques called intervention. Intervention is a small injection technique which helps to get rid of root problem without surgery. Your doctor will see all reports and then suggest you best treatment options for you.
As science advances, the treatment of slipped disc is becoming less and less invasive. Now a days various options for slipped disc minimally invasive treatments are widely available. Slipped disc treatment in India (bulging and herniated disc treatment) is keeping pace with world. All advance and minimally slipped disc treatment is available in India. Event at LiveWell Pain & Spine Hospital we do all these pain procedures very routinely.
If conservative treatments fail, advanced interventions are offered:
(A) Transforaminal Block
A minimally invasive injection technique to reduce swelling and alleviate pain.
Mild bulge (slipped) disc can cause a swelling on the existing nerve roots. Injecting a drug in to a foramen will reduce that swelling inside and help the patient by dissipating the pain.
Transforaminal Block is given under local anesthesia. It is given under live X-ray (C arm) guidance. Here we numb a part of the back and insert a thin needle inside. The needle is guided with the help of a Live X-ray Machine.
This is a 15 minutes procedure and patient can walk away after 2 hours.
(B) Percutaneous Disc Decompression / Nucleoplasty
Non-surgical removal of herniated disc material using specialized instruments like Stryker’s DeKompressor.
In this procedure we remove a part of the herniated disc through a needle. This is a non-surgical treatment for slipped disc. We have the latest equipment to do these procedures for bulging disc treatment.
This procedure is recommended in chronic sciatica patients who have a significant disc herniation which is pressing on nerve roots and not responding to conservative treatment.
  • For Disc Decompressor we use Stryker’s DeKompressor from USA.
  • For Nucleoplasty we use Arthocare’s Instruments from Germany.
(C) Endoscopic Disc Removal
A modern technique using an endoscope to directly visualize and remove the bulging disc with minimal recovery time.
For an endoscopic disc removal, we remove a bulged disc through an instrument called endoscope. After numbing a skin and underlying muscles we insert endoscope inside a slipped disc. We remove a bulged disc under direct vision. It is an excellent procedure and we can remove a significant amount of disc material with this procedure.
You can avoid a major surgery for slipped disc – opting for minimally invasive herniated slipped disc treatment. Patient can go home on same or next day.
  • For endoscopic procedure we use Karl Storz endoscope from USA, in treating spinal disk herniation treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER PROCEDURE?
After the endoscopic procedure for slipped disc treatment or herniated disc treatment, patient may expect:
  • Mild aching back, which will be relieved with medicine
  • Improvement in pain will start after two to three days
  • It is recommended that patients apply ice on the back for three to four days
  • Patient must take rest for 1 to 2 days although no complete bed rest is required
ADVANTAGES OF THE PROCEDURE
  • Get rid of Slipped disc / Sciatica problem without surgery
  • Removes a part of disc
  • Procedure is done under local anesthesia
  • No bed rest needed
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Short recovery period
  • Provide a disc sample for biopsy if required
  • Intense rehabilitation not required
  • No major surgery-based consequences
  • No scarring after procedure
  • Cost effective due to reduced hospital stay
  • Can be done on elderly patients too
(D) Surgical Treatments
In severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Our experienced surgeons perform procedures like laminectomy to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care at the best hospital for herniated disc treatment.
Laminectomy is a surgery done to remove excessive pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots & is done under general anesthesia. This surgery removes a portion of thin part of vertebra called lamina which forms a protective arch of vertebra. Laminectomy also removes a thick part of tissue around spinal cord on selected vertebra.
